Demis Hassabis: Certain AI capabilities like scientific hypothesis generation and novel problem formulation remain unsolved; may require 2+ additional breakthroughs beyond current models

Dario Amodei· Anthropic· AI· 2026-07-22· about DeepMind
Some areas of natural science are much harder to do than that... coming up with the question in the first place or coming up with the theory or the hypothesis. I think that's much much harder and I think that's the highest level of scientific creativity... I think there may be one or two missing ingredients.

Why it matters

DeepMind's CEO suggests that autonomous scientific research is further away than AI-driven coding, indicating a technology gap that will delay full labor displacement in research-intensive fields and discovery.

Investment implication

Suggests longer runway for research-focused roles (scientists, domain experts, hypothesis generators). May extend timelines for AI disruption in biotech, materials science, and physics. Favors companies in wet-lab automation and experimental validation infrastructure.
