SpaceX (via Colossus data center acquired from XAI) and Anthropic in strategic compute partnership; space-based data centers positioned as future solution to thermal/power constraints
Jeff Cardenas· Apptronik· Robotics· 2026-07-21· about SpaceX, Anthropic, XAI (TSLA)
“Anthropic has been on such a tear that demand has been outstripping their ability for compute that they did this huge deal with XAI and took over all of the excess compute with Colossus. I think that that Grock was using about 11% of the compute there and it looks like SpaceX is pivoting to become and it actually makes kind of sense if you think about their strategy pivoting to become a data center um company that is located in space because you can keep everything so cool there um just given how cold space is.”
Why it matters
AI compute scarcity is driving SpaceX to pivot toward space-based data center operations. This signals that terrestrial compute capacity and thermal management are becoming critical infrastructure constraints for frontier AI training and inference.
Investment implication
Companies specializing in advanced cooling systems, power distribution for data centers, and space-qualified electronics should see increased demand. Satellite operators and space infrastructure providers may benefit from SpaceX's pivot. GPU manufacturers (NVIDIA) face new competition from alternative deployment architectures.
