Isomorphic Labs (DeepMind spinout) targets 10-year timeline to compress drug discovery from decade-long process to weeks/days; pre-clinical candidates expected next year

Demis Hassabis· Google DeepMind· AI· 2026-07-19· about Isomorphic Labs
So isomorphic, you can think of it as building many uh adjacent alpha folds to help with things like designing chemical compounds that don't have any side effects but bind to the right place on the protein. And um I think we could reduce down drug discovery from taking years, sometimes a decade to do down to maybe weeks or even days uh over the next 10 years... We're building up the platform right now and it's uh we have great partnerships with Eli Lilly. I think you had the CEO speaking earlier and Novartis which are fantastic and our own internal drug programs and I think we'll be entering sort of pre-clinical phase sometime next year.

Why it matters

Isomorphic is building on AlphaFold IP with partnerships from major pharma (Eli Lilly, Novartis). Pre-clinical candidates launching next year signals concrete progress. If successful, this accelerates drug development timelines by 10-100x, creating massive TAM expansion.

Investment implication

Eli Lilly and Novartis are positioned to benefit from first-mover access to AI-accelerated drug discovery; biotech contract research organizations (CROs) may face margin pressure as AI streamlines discovery phases. Computational chemistry and protein structure software vendors may see declining demand for traditional tools.
