Rivian secured $1.25B partnership with Uber to deploy R2 robo-taxis starting 2028 in Miami and San Francisco, expanding to 25 major US and European cities

RJ Scaringe· Rivian· Robotics· 2026-06-26· about Uber (UBER)
we announced that as a $1.25 billion deal we did with with Uber. We're deploying robo-taxis. So, the R2 product in a robo-taxi form uh starting in 2028. First two cities will be Miami and San Francisco, but over the next, you know, few years following that, we'll roll out across a number of big cities, 25 different big cities, and hopefully it'll be uh across the United States, across Europe uh with a robo-taxi platform.

Why it matters

Uber is committing $1.25B to deploy Rivian's R2 as its primary robo-taxi platform, signaling major capex acceleration for autonomous vehicle manufacturing and creating guaranteed demand for Rivian's production capacity through the late 2020s.

Investment implication

Rivian will need to secure significant manufacturing capacity and supply chain commitments to scale R2 production for Uber's 25-city rollout. This creates demand signals for EV battery suppliers, autonomous driving sensor providers, and contract manufacturers supporting Rivian.
