Rivian signed $5.8B software licensing deal with Volkswagen Group covering software and high-voltage electronics across Porsche, Audi, and VW brands

RJ Scaringe· Rivian· Robotics· 2026-06-26· about Volkswagen Group (VLKAF)
fast forward late 2024, we actually did a $5.8 billion software licensing deal with Volkswagen, which is a really cool thing for me cuz I grew up as a car enthusiast. I loved Porsches and Volkswagens specifically. And so, it's nice to see our tech our software and some of our electronics making their way across the portfolio of products within Volkswagen Group. Uh everything from Porsches to VWs is is really exciting.

Why it matters

Rivian's software stack has become a licensable product generating billions in recurring revenue from a major OEM, validating years of vertical integration investments and creating a new revenue stream beyond vehicle sales.

Investment implication

Volkswagen Group is now dependent on Rivian's software and electronics architecture for its EV portfolio, making Rivian a critical technology supplier to one of the world's largest automakers. This changes Rivian's strategic positioning from pure automaker to software infrastructure provider.
