Meta reports continued underestimation of compute needs; 2027 CapEx planning process is 'very dynamic' with expectation that compute will become even more central to business

Mark Zuckerberg· Meta· AI· 2026-04-29· about Meta Platforms (META)
Our experience so far has been that we have continued to underestimate our compute needs even as we have been ramping capacity significantly, as the advances in AI have continued and our teams continue to identify compelling new projects and initiatives—and now, too, there are very compelling internal use cases. So our expectation is that compute will become even more central to the business going forward, and it will be critical to determining the quality of the models we develop, the types of products we can introduce, and how productive we can be as an organization.

Why it matters

Meta's CFO explicitly states historical underestimation of compute needs and expects compute to become MORE central, signaling continued infrastructure scarcity and pricing power for suppliers.

Investment implication

Data center capacity providers, semiconductor suppliers, and power infrastructure will remain capacity-constrained. Companies dependent on compute access (AI startups, cloud consumers) face sustained pricing pressure and allocation risk.
