TinyBox ($15k, ~1 PetaFLOP) targets decentralized AI inference on AMD/Intel GPUs; challenges NVIDIA's consumer/prosumer lock-in via commodity hardware + TinyGrad software

George Hotz· Comma.ai· Robotics· —· pub 2026-08-07· about AMD, Intel (AMD, INTC)
It's called the Tiny Box. Um, it's $15,000. And it's almost a pal flop of compute... The main limiting spec is a 120 volt 15 amp circuit... Today, I'm leaning toward AMD... we're pretty agnostic to the type of compute... I want to deliver a really good experience to people... The thing that I want to deliver to people out of the box is being able to run 65 billion parameter llama in FP16 in real time in like a good like 10 tokens per second.

Why it matters

TinyBox is a plug-and-play edge AI system that runs large LLMs locally without cloud dependency or NVIDIA GPUs. Success would prove consumer/prosumer demand for decentralized inference, validating AMD and Intel as viable GPU suppliers for this segment and threatening NVIDIA's consumer RTX revenue.

Investment implication

AMD GPU adoption could accelerate if TinyBox gains traction; validates demand for non-NVIDIA inference hardware. Increases competitive pressure on NVIDIA's GeForce/RTX business in prosumer/content creator segment and validates edge AI as a distinct market from cloud.
