DeepMind spun out Isomorphic Labs to solve drug discovery chemistry; 5-10 year timeline to drug design engine.

Demis Hassabis· Google DeepMind· AI· —· pub 2026-08-03· about Isomorphic Labs
After we did the alpha fold project to do protein folding, then we spun out a company called Isomorphic Labs, which is doing extremely well... we're focusing on solving the rest of the drug discovery process which is a lot of chemistry designing the compounds checking it's not toxic... I think we'll have that whole drug design engine ready in you know the next five plus 5 to 10 years.

Why it matters

Isomorphic Labs is explicitly tasked with solving post-AlphaFold drug discovery bottlenecks (compound design, toxicity screening, properties validation). A successful 5-10 year deployment could materially accelerate pharmaceutical R&D and create a new picks-and-shovels category around AI-assisted chemistry tooling.

Investment implication

Investors should monitor Isomorphic Labs' progress and funding; if successful, it validates a new model for AI-native pharma and chemistry software companies. Public pharma and CDMOs may face disruption or partnership opportunities; biotech SaaS firms (e.g., Schrödinger, Benchling) could face competition or acquisition pressure from DeepMind/Google.
