US physical AI labs hold meaningful edge over China in robotics; Chinese companies may depend on US AI IP

Andrew Kang· Mechanism Capital· Robotics· —· pub 2026-07-28· about Figure, Tesla (US); unnamed Chinese robotics companies (100+)
The AI piece is I think what is underappreciated that the US is ahead on in terms of physical intelligence. The top physical AI labs in America have some meaningful edge over the leading Chinese labs and without the robot brain, the robot's pretty useless. And so if that trend continues, then maybe we do see some dependency from the Chinese companies on US physical intelligence.

Why it matters

If US physical AI capabilities remain defensibly ahead, Chinese robotics manufacturers may face a structural dependency on accessing US AI models or licensing US physical intelligence — creating potential regulatory leverage and market concentration risk for US AI leaders.

Investment implication

Investors should monitor whether Figure and Tesla can sustain their AI advantage and monetize it through licensing or partnerships with international robotics OEMs. Conversely, Chinese robotics companies (100+) may face margin pressure or IP licensing costs if forced to adopt US AI stacks.
