Actuators are critical 30-50% BOM bottleneck for humanoid robots; China leading manufacturing buildout with major companies sourcing there.
Andrew Kang· Mechanism Capital· Robotics· 2025-01-27· about Tesla, unnamed Chinese actuator manufacturers (TSLA)
“Actuators are a big thing, right? Actuators are basically the the motors that make the the joints move for the robots, right? They power the robots in the real world. And the actuator, there are a bunch of them in in an actual robot. And they, you know, each of them could be in in different shapes and and sizes. and they make up around 30 to 50% of the the bill of materials, the bomb cost of a robot... And there's a lot of investment going into building out that part of the supply chain in China specifically actually and they're actually making some really great progress there which is why you're seeing some big companies basically sourcing their actuators from China. Even Tesla for example, I think that's been in the news.”
Why it matters
Actuators represent the single largest material cost component of humanoid robots (30-50% of BOM) and are presently capacity-constrained. The concentration of manufacturing buildout in China creates geopolitical supply chain risk and suggests investors should monitor Chinese actuator suppliers and US companies' sourcing dependencies.
Investment implication
Long-term robotics capex will be gated by actuator supply. Investors should track: (1) Chinese actuator supplier capacity growth, (2) US robotics companies' supply chain resilience and nearshoring efforts, (3) potential tariff/trade policy impacts on actuator sourcing, and (4) opportunities for US-based actuator manufacturers or automation suppliers to fill the gap.
