Optimus production requires entirely new supply chain; Tesla inhousing most components due to lack of existing suppliers
Elon Musk· Tesla / SpaceX / xAI· Robotics· 2026-04-01· about Tesla (TSLA)
“with Optimus, there is no supply chain. So we've had to build up a supply chain in its entirety um or inhouse the production. And we've we actually've inhouse a tremendous amount.”
Why it matters
Unlike EV production which leverages existing suppliers for wheels, mirrors, and glass, Optimus has zero existing supply base. This creates a massive manufacturing bottleneck and suggests Tesla will need to vertically integrate or develop entirely new supplier relationships.
Investment implication
Companies supplying traditional automotive components (wheels, glass, etc.) will not benefit from Optimus scaling. Conversely, precision manufacturing, actuation systems, and advanced materials suppliers catering to robotics will become critical. Tesla's vertical integration strategy may limit M&A or partnership opportunities for component suppliers.
